There is a sense in which the core of the Good Friday agreement could have been written by Friel. A key section of the agreement explicitly recognized the right of the people of Northern Ireland to “identify themselves as Irish or British or both, as they may so choose.” This is an open and poetic language, a syntax rich with possibilities that challenge traditional definitions of sovereignty, self-determination and political identity.
